So I have 2, 751 followers through GFC (Google Friend Connect), but as of today I am officially breaking up with GFC, and here is why.

1. I don't believe GFC brings  much traffic to my blog

Yup! There's the truth. Now I'm not saying I don't get any views from followers that follow through GFC, BUT I do feel (and according to my stats) the majority of my page views come from Facebook, Bloglovin,  Feedspot, Google search, and Twitter. I personally do not believe GFC brings my pageviews, I may have alot of followers through GFC, but I don't think many people that follow with GFC, are followers that re-visit blogs often.

2. It's just a number

I'm going to be honest and say the only reason I have had the GFC on my sidebar the past while is because I like the number. It's cool seeing such a large number of followers, but if the majority of people that are following me with GFC are not people I am seeing returning, then why should I keep it?? THERE IS NO REASON. Since using Bloglovin I have been noticing new followers that are RETURNING, and noticing my pageviews going up some since offering bloglovin as a way to follow my blog.

3. I hope to move to wordpress someday in the future

I have been wanting to move to wordpress for sometime, and someday I hope to move to wordpress. For people that don't know, wordpress does not offer GFC, GFC is only allowed for Blogger users (which I am). So for me to keep offering GFC as a way for people to follow my blog, and getting new followers through GFC makes no sense if once I move to wordpress they will all be lost.

So there you have it, those are just 3 quick reasons why I will no longer have GFC on my sidebar. I have other reasons, such as me thinking alot of other blog following platforms are better, and feeling alot of people don't use gfc anymore, but those are the 3 main reasons why I am breaking up with GFC.

What if you're someone that follows me with GFC?

Don't worry! If you are someone that does still use GFC and you follow me with GFC, then you will still get my blog updates in your feed, I just will no longer be advertsing GFC on my sidebar in the hopes that people will follow me other ways.

I think when Google Reader shut down people just assumed it meant the end of GFC also and switched to other ways of following. When GFC stopped working on non-blogger blogs back in 2012 they also announced that GFC would go away for everyone. Google + is supposed to replace GFC eventually. Of course, by removing GFC from your sidebar, you are making it harder for followers to stop following you. :)

Non-blogger here. I prefer using Bloglovin to keep up with the blogs that I follow. I think it's much more convenient.

I love bloglovin'

I totally agree with you about GFC! I really doubt any of my 'followers' via there actually visit my blog now days. I think bloglovin' so just so much more convient, and so much easier to use.
Loving the new layout Haley! :D It's really pretty. ^.^

Much love! <3

My experience is the same as yours! I only have a handful of GFC followers (under 200), but it doesn't seem to matter. My theory is that the vast majority of them clicked "Follow" for a lark and then just lost interest (which is fair enough), but didn't remove my blog from their feed. I've actually been thinking about removing the GFC widget from my sidebar because it's that meaningless.

And now for the irony . . . I'm here because I'm a GFC follower of your blog and was intrigued when this title showed up on my feed! =P

I've found that I prefer to follow blogs through email. I have the Bloglovin and GFC feature on my blog but wonder how many actually return to it. The emails from blogs actually give me the info right away without having to dig through other posts and such.

My GFC number is pathetic on my YA / NA blog...ha! But, when I visit people's blogs, I choose to follow by email, as I like to get posts directly in my inbox. GFC doesn't really seem to drive traffic at all that I can tell.

I agree with you on GFC being just a number. I had really stressed about leaving Blogger and going to Wordpress but once Reader went down I felt it was the time. I hope you get to move to WP soon, it's so awesome!

WordPress is awesome, you will not regret it :-D!

@Sandra @ Waiting For Wentworth Ya I think in 2012 when Google took GFC away from all non blogger blogs is when things started going down hill for it!!

Haley @ YA-Aholic said...

@Marni Jarman I use to follow blogs with email, but then I got annoyed with the constant emails, so now I just use bloglovin! (:

Haley @ YA-Aholic said...

@Niecey Roy Ya I can't tell how much of my traffic comes from GFC, but I think it is a VERY small percentage of my views! lol

I agree about GFC! I honestly don't even know how many people follow me since switching to Wordpress. I have Bloglovin, but I never really pay attention to it - and it just makes blogging so much more enjoyable. I love NOT knowing how many people follow me. I'd rather have people comment and enjoy what I write rather than just follow to follow.

Great post! Can't wait for you to move over to Wordpress!

I follow a lot of blogs via GFC, but I know that it's the least used form of following for most people. I do try and follow blogs in other ways too, in order to keep up. The biggest thing for me are all the blogs in my sidebar because I can automatically see who has a new post. That's mainly how I follow and visit your blog. :)

I follow all the blogs through Bloglovin'. I don't think GFC adds anything to the blog and I've been thinking about deleting it too.. That's why I've placed it on the bottom of my sidebar and I might delete it soon too :)

Unknown said...

to be honest, I am not a huge fan of GFC, I think it it has become redundant since things like bloglovin' have came in to play. Like you said, GFC is nice for a number, but I think that is about all it is useful for nowadays.

PS, loving the new theme! You are so good at with your designs, what programs do you use? :) xoxox

Haley @ YA-Aholic said...

@Alex SharrockI use the program Artisteer! (:
